Start the day in the church pews!

In our regular programme fixture «today's sermon» we invite dedicated professionals up on the pulpit to present a challenge within the 2026 Triennale's title question – "What if Nature Comes First?" – and a solution. Drop by the Sofienberg Church in the morning hours and start the day with church coffee and a short lecture.

This morning we meet Kristian Knorr Svane (Wienerberger), who will hold the sermon "The buried and the living nature". In his sermon, he will talk about resources and nature from his perspective in brick production.

The buried nature haunts brick production, is his claim – but if we use geologi and the nature in the right way the living nature will also have space. Brick production takes up surprisingly small space in the landscape, and the clay to make one regular brick does not consume more land than 0,5 cm2. At the same time, the long life span of brick buildings means less demolition, new-building and lower land use over time. An important question is what nature the building industry is to consume – and which nature it gives room for.

Kristian Knorr Svane is Nordic Head of Sustainability in Wienerberger, where he works with reducing the climate, biodiversity and resource footprint of brick production. With a background as an architect, in companies such as GXN, AART Architects and Lendager Group, he has worked with how innovation and circularity can works as driving forces in the development of our built environment.
