Four days with lime and brick: learn "coccio pesto" with studio dreiSt

In the days before Oslo Architecture Triennale 2026 opens, studio dreiSt and Wienerberger invites you to a workshop in coccio pesto. Together, participants will make the panels that form the surface of the communal table in Sofienberg Church.

Coccio pesto is a Roman technique based on lime and crushed brick. The lime is mixed with brick sand, and pieces of brick are cut and set into the mixture. The result is a hard-wearing surface that shows the materials it is made from.

During the workshop, participants learn about locally sourced lime and work hands-on with the mixture of brick sand and lime. The surface connects the table to the materials of Sofienberg Church, the main venue of the triennale. The table stays in place for the full triennale, from 17 September to 1 October, and serves as a gathering point for visitors, contributors and events.

The workshop is led by studio dreiSt

studio dreiSt is an Austrian studio working with materials, craft and built installations. The workshop is led by Martin Kohlbauer, Luisa Zwetkow and Sophie Coqui.

Wienerberger supports the work

Wienerberger, the world's largest producer of brick, sponsors the workshop and of Oslo Architecture Triennale 2026 as a whole. The brick that participants work with is at the core of the coccio pesto technique, and the support from Wienerberger makes it possible to produce the table on site, with materials that remain in the building throughout the festival.
